‘Sherlock’ creators previously mentioned plans to revive the show with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for a film, but the project is yet to move forward. Steven Moffat explained why they couldn’t come back yet in a recent interview with Metro.co.uk.
He said the lead actors were too busy at the moment:
“As I’ve said before, I’ll do it tomorrow. I mean, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 60 novels. It’s not a format that will wear out. Sherlock Holmes will never wear out. I’d love to do it again. I would absolutely love to again. I’m easy, but you need to get the two big stars. That’s the problem.”

Mark Gatiss also confirmed in past interviews that bringing everyone back for a ‘Sherlock’ film was ‘difficult.’ He told The Guardian last year that continuing the story was ‘the natural thing to do’ after what happened in the final season but noted:
“People think you can just wave a wand. It’s incredibly difficult to get people interested, and get films made. I remember talking to Edgar Wright about ‘Ant-Man,’ into which he put eight years of his life and then didn’t make it. Eight years is not short of a decade.”
A New Sherlock Holmes Show Is On The Horizon
Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video announced a separate Sherlock Holmes project with Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Tiffin will team up with director Guy Ritchie for a new series based on Andy Lane’s ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ books.
The eight-episode show will follow Young Holmes’ early years in crime-solving. Ritchie and Lane will also serve as executive producers for the project. Matthew Parkhill will write the script.
