Showrunner Says She’s Ready To Expand ‘The Acolyte’ Universe With New Characters

The show might bring in new High Republic characters if it gets a second season.

Though ‘The Acolyte’ became the second most popular series for streaming and engagement since its debut in early June, Lucasfilm hasn’t approved a Season 2 yet. Still, showrunner Leslye Headland shared her ideas for a potential follow-up in a recent chat with Inverse.

The writer teased some of the new High Republic characters she wanted to add to the next season by saying:

“I already talked about Plagueis, and then there’s a bunch of High Republic, Legends stuff that I’d be interested in folding into the show. I’ve already talked to [Lucasfilm executive] Pablo [Hidaldo] about some characters from the High Republic. We’re still working that out.”

What Else To Expect From Season 2?

The series has already brought several High Republic Era characters into the live-action scene. Amandla Stenberg portrayed twin sisters, Osha and Mae, born through the Force. Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, and Rebecca Henderson appeared as Jedi Master Sol, The Stranger, and Vernestra Rwoh, respectively.

Headland plans to explore these characters’ relationships further in Season 2:

“I am really excited about the prospect of the Mae-Vernestra relationship. I really love the idea that Vernestra now has on her hands a Force-sensitive, powerful woman that is, at this point, docile enough that Vernestra would be able to educate and form an allegiance with. So, that was very exciting to me to set up.”

She went on:

“Osha and The Stranger is probably the juiciest relationship that I would love to dive into. There’s so much about them that I would love to explore more and not just the hand-holding.”

There May Not Be A New Season

‘The Acolyte’ faced backlash and review bombing from its first episode. Fans criticized it for various reasons including being ‘woke’ and breaking the ‘Star Wars’ lore. It now holds an 81% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes against the lowest audience rating for any ‘Star Wars’ project with 15%.

Headland is uncertain about the future of the show, as she explained to EW:

“I think there’s enough stuff in the last few episodes that you would want to have answered. … I threw everything into season 1, because who knows what’s going to happen? And then I’d say there are four to five major mysteries and plot points that have to get hit in season 2.”

Viewers online started demanding a Season 2 shortly after the Season 1 finale aired last week. Lucasfilm and Disney+ are yet to respond to the reactions.
