Shrek and Minions are hitting theaters in 2026, via Variety. Universal Pictures said ‘Shrek 5’ is delayed to December 23, 2026, instead of July. ‘Minions 3’ will now be released in summer 2026, moving up from June 2027.
Fans discussed the latest development on Reddit. A person wrote, “I know it’s a fool’s hope, but I hope the next Shrek movie is of the quality as ‘Puss in Boots: Last Wish.’
“Well, that’s unfortunate for the All-Star but hey, at least it gives DreamWorks more time to think of a good plot so yeah, I’ll give them a thumbs up for this,” another individual shared. “If it’s anywhere near as good as ‘Puss in Boots 2’ then I will wait patiently,” one other commenter added.
Universal also moved an untitled Illumination movie from March to June 2027.
‘Shrek 5’ is set for December 2026, just in time for the 25th anniversary. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will return as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. The film will be directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon. Producers Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri are returning, with Brad Ableson as co-director.
The ‘Shrek’ series, starting in 2001, has earned over $2.9 billion worldwide and inspired shows, musicals, and attractions. ‘Shrek 5’ comes over 15 years after ‘Shrek Forever After.’ The series gained new interest with 2023’s ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,’ which hinted at a return to Far Far Away, as Collider reported. Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Harvey Guillén are likely to return as Puss, Kitty, and Perrito.
Illumination Studios CEO, Chris Meledandri, hinted at a sequel in 2023. Eddie Murphy later shared that work on ‘Shrek 5’ began last year, with plans to finish soon, and a Donkey movie will follow.
