Apple TV+’s ‘Silo’ is nearing the end of its second season, and we are getting a special behind-the-scenes look from Steve Zahn.
In a new video, Zahn gives a tour of the Vault, a key location in the show. The Vault, officially called Silo 17’s Legacy and Algorithm Room, is where Solo has lived in isolation for decades. The actor shares how Solo’s living space reflects his lonely and chaotic mind.
He explains that Solo fills his time by making puppets and putting on shows for himself. This is his way of coping with the lack of human interaction. “He’s desperate for people to be around,” Zahn said. “So, he creates these puppets.”
The set is filled with scattered objects and strange creations, and it mirrors Solo’s personality. Zahn even called it ‘the inside of Solo’s brain.’
“He puts on a show,” Zahn explained. “He’s like a Renaissance man. But he doesn’t know what’s fiction. He doesn’t know what’s real. It’s ungrounded knowledge. If I was this guy, I would be immersed in this stuff.”
In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zahn talked about how Solo’s isolation impacts his behavior. “The only reason he survived is because of his curiosity and his ability to go down rabbit holes,” he explained. “I think one thing that helps [us all] in general, and him individually, is art. Art is so important: Creating stuff, knowing stuff, having puppets, his airplanes.”
Spoiler warning: ‘Silo’ fans who haven’t caught up yet might want to stop reading here.
Fans first met Solo in the season two premiere, where only his eyes were visible through the Vault window. His soft, child-like curiosity quickly turned into a warning when he told Juliette, “You do that again, and I’m going to kill you.”
Episode 9, titled ‘The Safeguard,’ revealed some big secrets about the character’s past. He is the orphaned son of Silo 17’s Head of IT. This tragic backstory shapes who he is. Solo lived alone in Silo 17 for years, surrounded by memories and objects from his childhood.
In the episode, Solo and Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) work together to unlock the Vault. They face danger during the scene, but they uncover crucial information about the connection between Silo 17 and Silo 18. This sets the stage for the season finale, airing this Friday.
