Simu Liu Offers Update On The ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

He and the director can’t wait to get started on the new movie.

Simu Liu has some exciting news for fans waiting for the ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ sequel.

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Liu confirmed that the sequel is definitely happening. Liu expressed how thrilled he and director Destin Daniel Cretton are to return to the Marvel universe and create a follow-up to the first film:

“It’s definitely happening. I should probably lead with that. And I think I speak for myself and Destin, our returning director, when I say that we’re so beyond excited to jump back in. We really are.”

Liu says fans have been asking Liu about the sequel for a long time. He shares that he receives messages every day from people who loved the first movie and can’t wait for the second one:

“People, whether it’s online or in person, ask me every single day, and tell me every single day how much they enjoyed the first movie, and how much of a moment it was. And I think there’s just so much goodwill, and I’m so deeply appreciative of that.

So please know, if you’ve ever sent me a message, if you’ve ever asked about a sequel, or just approached, or any which way, I take it to heart and I really appreciate it. I really do.”

He assures everyone that their excitement and support mean a lot to him and the team.

The First Movie Broke Records

The first ‘Shang-Chi’ movie was released in September 2021, and it was a big hit: it managed to earn over $430 million worldwide during the pandemic. The film even broke the record for the highest-grossing Labor Day weekend opening.

The movie teased Shang-Chi’s future adventures with Wong, Bruce Banner, and Captain Marvel in a scene after the credits. Marvel Studios and Disney announced a sequel in December 2021, with Destin Daniel Cretton returning as the director.

Liu told Collider last year that the sequel would expand the story and include many characters from the first film. He said they plan to deliver all the action that fans loved in the first movie:

“Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s a pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed. It feels like we’ve established a world and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about.

We’re getting to revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things. We’ll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for on the first movie, but then also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him. That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”

There is no specific release date yet, but Liu previously hinted that the sequel may come out sometime between May 2026 and May 2027. He also responded to a fan’s comment on Threads and promised they are working on the sequel.
