‘Sing, You’ve Paid for It!’: Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Moana 2’ Advice Receives Backlash

There were disturbing moments during the theatrical screenings of Wicked and MOANA 2.

It appears that during the screenings of Wicked and Moana 2 in cinemas, songs were sung and recorded by the audience.

Dwayne Johnson received mixed reactions for encouraging the audience to sing along during a Moana 2 screening. He said, “You can sing the song! You paid for a hard-earned ticket and went to a musical; you got into it. Sing the song.”

Additionally, this weekend, X was filled with complaints about how moviegoers behaved during Wicked screenings. From people taking photos and videos on their phones to others recording themselves singing at various points, there was debate over what a ticket actually entitles someone to and whether this behavior belongs in a cinema setting.

Last week, AMC Theatres spokesperson Ryan Noonan was asked about audience behavior during Wicked screenings. He said, “AMC has long upheld a policy banning disruptive behavior. Wicked preview screenings include themes [such as ‘not singing along’] as a fun and engaging reminder to moviegoers to enjoy the show without disrupting the experience for those around them.”

However, the Wicked musical adaptation will officially hit cinemas on Christmas Day. Star Ariana Grande was asked during the press tour about audiences singing along during regular screenings. She said, “If [you sing along], we understand. Respect emotions… but if someone throws popcorn, a phone, or something else at you, maybe stop.”

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 reunites Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) three years later as they embark on a new, expansive journey with a crew of seasoned voyagers. After receiving an unexpected call from her ancestors, Moana sets sail into Oceania’s farthest seas and dangerous, long-forgotten waters for an adventure unlike any she’s faced before.

The voice cast also includes Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Hualālai Chung, David Fane, Rose Matafeo, Awhimai Fraser, Gerald Ramsey, and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s sweet and adorable younger sister, Simea.

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27, 2024.
