Tom Welling didn’t get to wear the Superman costume until the ‘Smallville’ finale in 2011. Even then, it was a brief appearance where he tore his shirt to reveal the iconic logo and flew away from a distance.
The actor wasn’t willing to put on the suit back then as the show didn’t have place for it, following Clark Kent’s journey to become a hero, but now, he is ready to wear it.
“You know, I think now because of the two boys that I have with my lovely wife,” Welling recently shared with ComicBook, “we have a bunch of costumes at home. It started out at the first Halloween and now we have, I don’t know, 40 or 50 costumes. The one costume we don’t have is the Superman costume.”
“I asked my son why and he said, ‘Because he’s taken,’ and I said, ‘By who?’ ‘By [you].’ That was like, ‘Alright, I think I’m open to the idea now.’ So, if you know anybody, I think it would be great. I think it would be fun to be part of.”
Welling reprised his role as Clark Kent in the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover years after the ‘Smallville’ finale, but he did not wear a costume then either. At Fan Expo Vancouver, he shared that “If [the studio] had started the conversation with ‘So, Clark is in the suit,’ I’d have been like [click].”
So, the crossover showed that his Clark gave up on his powers to live a peaceful life with his family, though the actor was unsure if this version was truly the one from ‘Smallville.’
Currently, Welling and Michael Rosenbaum are looking to go about Clark Kent’s story from a different perspective in an animated sequel show. Their long-planned project is yet to be approved.
