A new ‘Ghostbusters’ animated movie is now set to join the ‘Ghostbusters’ animated series currently in development. Sony Animation and Netflix are reportedly teaming up to produce the movie, with Kris Pearn attached as director. Although the project is still in the early stages, sources close to it are optimistic, believing it could have a transformative impact on the franchise, similar to what the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies did for ‘Spider-Man.’
Pearn already has a strong working relationship with both Netflix and Sony Animation, having previously directed ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2’ and ‘The Willoughbys.’
The most recent film was ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,’ grossed approximately $201 million at the box office. ‘Frozen Empire’ filmmaker Gil Kenan discussed the future of the franchise and the potential for more live-action big-screen entries in an interview with The Direct.
“We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen,” Kenan said. “Jason [Reitman]… we take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of ‘Ghostbusters’ very seriously… we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big ‘Ghostbuster’ stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more. There’ll be more about that later.”
Regarding the animated series, Elliott Kaplan is serving as writer, showrunner, and executive producer for Sony’s Ghost Corps, Inc. Jason Reitman is also an executive producer, while franchise co-creator Dan Aykroyd is on board in the same capacity. While details are still scarce, the series is said to mirror the tone of the recent films, which ushered in a new era for the franchise with ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’
