Amazon MGM Studios is eyeing several young actors to play Lara Croft in the new ‘Tomb Raider’ series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Both Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton are in the testing process for the role, according to Deadline.
Sophie Turner currently stars in the British crime drama ‘Joan’ and will appear in the upcoming Prime Video show ‘Haven.’ Lucy Boynton recently led in ‘The Greatest Hits’ and will soon star in ‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.’
The selection process for the new Lara Croft is secretive, with few details released. While Turner and Boynton are confirmed for auditions, other potential candidates like Emma Corrin and Mackenzie Davis are reportedly not testing for the part.
The plot of the show is also unclear, but according to Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke it’s an ‘epic’ and ‘globe-trotting’ adventure. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is already excited for the project as a longtime fan of the ‘Tomb Raider’ games.
“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” the writer shared earlier this year. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”
Waller-Bridge is also an executive producer on the series along with Jenny Robins from Wells Street Productions and Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment. Michael Scheel, Legendary Television, and Crystal Dynamics are part of the production team.
