The web television series created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ welcomed its first explicitly transgender and non-binary characters that would appear in season 3.
According to what producers said on September 2, Ian Alexander who known for playing ‘Buck Vu’ on ‘The OA’ will portray the transgender character, ‘Gray’ while Blu del Barrio representing non-binary ‘Adira.’
To announce the exciting news, the official Twitter page for the series, named ‘Star Trek on CBS All Access’ made the following statement:
“Welcome Blu del Barrio and @ianaIexander to the #StarTrekFamily! They will be playing Adira, Star Trek’s first non-binary character, and Gray, Star Trek’s first transgender character in #StarTrekDiscovery Season 3.”
Apart from this statement, co-showrunner and executive producer, Michelle Paradise said that ‘Star Trek’ had always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities, and added that the series believed in representing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender or sexual orientation. Paradise continued:
“We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander, and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment, and joy.”
STARTREK.COM STAFF, in a blog post published on September 2, described ‘Adira’ as intelligent with confidence and self-assurance; and added that Gray was empathetic and desire to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Trill host.
Season 3 will be released on CBS All Access on October 15.
