The 2024 Academy Awards nominations have sparked a lot of discussions, particularly regarding the exclusion of Greta Gerwig from the Best Director category.
The ‘Barbie’ director’s name didn’t appear among the nominees like Justine Triet, Yorgos Lantimos, Jonathan Glazer, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan in the list shared on Tuesday. This has caught the attention of many, including author Stephen King, who has openly criticized the Academy’s choices on X:
“The Oscar nominations and moviegoing tastes have pretty much parted company.”
About Gerwig’s snub, he added:
“No nom for Great Gerwig? Can that actually be true?”
King Is Not The Only One Upset
The decision also puzzled others in the film industry, including America Ferrera, who starred in ‘Barbie.’ Ferrera shared her thoughts on Gerwig, a previous Best Director nominee for ‘Lady Bird,’ being left out this year in an interview with Variety:
“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon.”
Regarding the film’s lead actress Margot Robbie, who also missed out on a Best Actress nomination, she commented:
“One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look. And perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress… In my book, she’s a master.”
The Film Competes In Other Categories
‘Barbie,’ however, did receive recognition in other areas. The film, which was the highest-grossing one of 2023, received eight Oscar nominations. These include nods for Ryan Gosling as Best Supporting Actor and Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress.
Additionally, the film is in the running for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.
