Sterling K. Brown Reveals The DC Superhero He Wishes To Play

He was inspired by the character’s role in the ‘Justice League’ series during his youth.

Known for his roles in ‘This Is Us’ and ‘American Fiction,’ Sterling K. Brown has recently shared his enthusiasm for a DC Universe character he hopes to portray. In an interview with American Fiction, Brown revealed this role he also feels personally connected to.

During the conversation, Brown admitted that he would want to play John Stewart, the Green Lantern, due to its significance in representation. Revealing his connection with Stewart dates back to his youth, he recalled:

“I watched that ‘Justice League’ cartoon religiously in high school, college right after, etc. It was dope. Seeing John Stewart, knowing that there was a black Green Lantern was something like in terms of representation, was like, ‘Oh Man! There’s a space for me in this world, and I see it.’ And when I looked [at the cartoon], I would think, ‘I look like this dude.’ It could happen; that would be legitimately exciting. That would be one of those giddy-inducing moments in life because my kids would get it without me having to explain it to them.”

The Future of Stewart, DCU, and Brown

John Stewart made his debut in DC Comics in 1971 and was one of the first African-American superheroes to appear in the publisher’s history. Stewart’s popularity surged with his portrayal in the ‘Justice League’ animated series, where he was voiced by Phil LaMarr.

Recently, the character appeared in the animated film ‘Green Lantern: Beware My Power‘ with Aldis Hodge lending his voice. Fans can look forward to seeing Stewart in the upcoming DCU series ‘Lanterns,‘ where he will be featured alongside Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in a story described as a ‘True Detective-type mystery.’

As the DC Extended Universe concluded in 2023 with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,‘ the anticipation for James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe (DCU) is high. The new universe is set to begin in 2024, with its formal launch marked by ‘Superman: Legacy‘ in July 2025, starring David Corenswet as Superman.

The series ‘Creature Commandos‘ will be the first DCU project to be released as an animated series on Max.

In addition to his interest in the DC Universe, Brown has a busy schedule with upcoming projects, including the TV series ‘Invincible,’ ‘Washington Black,’ ‘Paradise City,’ and a Hulu project yet to be titled. His new film ventures include ‘Atlas,’ ‘The Psalm of Howard Thurman,’ and ‘The Defender.’
