Sting played the sadistic heir of House Harkonnen, Feyd-Rautha, in David Lynch’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ series. Austin Butler took over the part in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ this year.
“I love him. He’s such a star, a really lovely actor,” the Police vocalist said when asked about his thoughts on Butler’s performance in a recent chat with USA Today. “I met him at the premiere and he was very sweet. I love the performance.”
“But I have one complaint about the Harkonnens, who are my people,” he added. “I think they’re far too easy to kill in the new iteration. We were tougher. They seem to fall over by blowing on them (laughs). But it’s a beautifully made film. Our version is a bit more camp. A lot of the visual tropes do come from David Lynch’s version and I think they’d be the first to admit it.”
‘Dune: Part Two’ saw release in February 2024, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson returning to lead the cast. Shortly after, Villeneuve announced that he was already working on the story’s ‘Part Three,’ though he avoided giving away any details about the script.
“I do not like to comment on ‘Dune Messiah’ because I’m writing it, and when I’m writing, I love to shut up because it’s a very delicate time where things are fragile, ideas evolve,” the director told Den of Geek. “I like to talk about movies when they are alive, finished, and strong enough to walk by themselves. ‘Dune Messiah’ is barely an embryo.”
Warner Bros. didn’t greenlight the next sequel yet, so it remains unclear when it will be released. But another ‘Dune’ project is set to hit screens later this year.
A spinoff show set 10,000 years before Frank Herbert’s original books will premiere on Max in November. Titled ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ it will explore the origins of Bene Gesserit, a group of women who manipulate the Imperium from behind the scenes.
