In a new chat with The Guardian, Kieran Culkin said he feels bad about a prank on Mark Ruffalo.
During a play with Ruffalo, Culkin swapped fake prop joints with real marijuana. Ruffalo unknowingly smoked it, and by the break, the whole cast was high. At that moment, he regretted it.
“I’m like, ‘I thought this was a good prank. I’m stupid. Oh my God, I’m so sorry,'” the actor said. “But actually, they loved it. Mark says, ‘I haven’t smoked pot in 10 years; the second half’s going to be so much fun.'”
Culkin went on to say, “There was this other actor who had never smoked pot in her life. She goes, ‘Is this what being high is? This is lovely.’ And then Phyllis Newman comes in and goes, ‘I haven’t smoked pot since the 1960s. Thank you, darling.'”
Ruffalo also talked about the incident in 2020 on The Graham Norton Show but didn’t name his costar. The actor explained, “There was a play that I did that I had to smoke a joint in the first scene. And of course, there was a very naughty young actor I was in the play with, who on the opening night with all the critics, he slipped a real joint onto the prop table.”
Ruffalo said he took big puffs of the joint, not knowing it was real, and later realized what happened. He noticed Culkin laughing backstage. He added, “I just went, ‘Oh sh*t.’ The girl that I was passing it to had never smoked pot in her life. I had, up to that point, smoked a lot of pot.”
“It was the worst thing I ever did. Don’t do it, but at the end of the play, I got the best reviews of my entire career,” Ruffalo also shared.
Culkin is promoting his comedy movie ‘A Real Pain,’ co-starring Jesse Eisenberg. He’s also up for a Golden Globe for his role.
