It’s been eight years since ‘Suicide Squad’ hit theaters, but director David Ayer isn’t giving up on his original vision for the film.
Ayer is campaigning to release his director’s cut, which he believes is much better than the version fans saw in 2016. He recently took to social media to ask for support in getting his version, known as the ‘Ayer Cut,’ released. He even created a new poster to promote it. For Ayer, this project is deeply personal:
“Harder than quitting smoking. Must be some magic there to keep pulling me back.”
Ayer admits he’s devastated to see his movie altered this much as he cares about it deeply:
“I care deeply. That’s why it hurts. I want closure. There’s no rule book here. I love making movies. I love directing. But man, it’s a brutal career choice. A lot about I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”
He’s Confident In His Version
Ayer says his version of ‘Suicide Squad’ has hours of unused footage that would change the entire feel of the movie. He previously compared the experience of seeing his work altered to:
“Watching someone you love get f*cked up by someone you hate. The big one is ‘Suicide Squad.’ That sh*t broke me. That handed me my *ss.”
He also said that if his version was released, people would’ve considered it a classic in the superhero genre.
Warner Bros. made major changes to Ayer’s original cut in 2016 before releasing the movie. They wanted to make the film lighter and more fun after the disappointing box office results of ‘Batman v Superman.’ Ayer was frustrated by these changes, as he felt they took away the darker and more serious tone he originally planned.
The ‘Suicide Squad’ that did come out in 2016 received mixed reviews. Critics and audiences pointed out issues with its editing and tone.
There’s been no official word from Warner Bros. about releasing the ‘Ayer Cut.’ The future of this version of Suicide Squad remains uncertain.
