ABC released a bold photo of Teri Hatcher in only Superman’s cape to promote ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ in the 1990s. The image became popular online during that era, and the Lois Lane actress looked back on it in a recent chat with The Guardian.
Hatcher was originally wearing a white blouse and pencil skirt during the photoshoot. “It wasn’t until the last take of the day that someone said: ‘Could we try the cape without the blouse?’” she shared. “I thought: ‘What does that imply? Why would Lois Lane be naked under the cape?’ We only did it as a lark, but the result was evocative. Now, I’m so much older, I still feel proud of it.”
The actress later did another similar shoot on a Superman-themed bed. She played Lois Lane opposite Dean Cain’s Clark Kent until the show ended in 1997.
‘Lois & Clark’ loosely followed Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s origin story but focused more on Lois and Clark’s relationship than the traditional Superman adventures. The show’s title placed Lois’s name first because she was the driving force in the story, according to Cain.
“The funny thing is that nowadays if you did that? Someone would say, ‘Oh, how progressive it’s going to be starring the woman first,’” he shared at the New York Comic Con panel celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary. “That wasn’t even a thought back then. It was just like saying it’s cloudy outside, it was just stating a fact. I think it was a testament to some advanced thinking.”
“I thought that was an exciting, new way to tell the story, as opposed to how it’s usually told through the adventures, and the fighting, and the saving the world and all of that,” Hatcher added. “But this was putting the relationship first, and I think that’s really exciting. And I think at the time that’s what audiences responded to. It’s what I responded to! I loved that part of our journey on the show.”
Superman and Lois Lane will soon return in James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman.’ The 2025 film will feature Rachel Brosnahan as the Daily Planet reporter and David Corenswet as the titular hero.
