‘Superman’s First Trailer Under Fire As Warner Bros. Demands ‘Make It Better’

Director clarifies the studio’s demands for his film’s first trailer.

Writer and filmmaker Dan Marcus recently claimed on X that Warner Bros. Discovery is feeling great pressure to deliver a high-quality first teaser for James Gunn’s ‘Superman.’ That’s why the studio sent back a nearly completed version of the trailer, instructing the editors to ‘make it better.’

When asked if this was true on Threads, Gunn explained, “Well, sort of. But when he says ‘studio’ that’s solely me, as the only studio involved in cutting or anything to do with the trailer is DC Studios i.e., me & Peter [Safran] (& I’m the creatively demanding one).”

“This is the exact same rigorous process I’ve gone through cutting every ‘Guardians’ trailer, pushing the marketing folks as hard as I can, cutting & recutting until I think we have something worthy of the film itself,” the director, who also worked on Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise, noted. “All that said, my notes are a lot more specific than ‘make it better.’”

Filming for ‘Superman’ finished over the summer, leaving about a year for post-production ahead of its release on July 11, 2025. Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the project, later shared excitement over the first trailer in a chat with Collider.

After admitting he was a long-time fan of the hero, the actor said, “I’ll tell you something — I hope I don’t get in trouble for this — I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer, and I’m not joking, and I’m not blowing this out of proportion, my skin was hot and I had goosebumps. That’s how great it is.”

Grillo previously appeared as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos.’ He starred in ‘Superman’ alongside David Corenswet as the titular hero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
