Filmmaker Taika Waititi reignited interest in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor with 2017’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ leading Lucasfilm to announce in 2020 that Waititi would develop a ‘Star Wars’ film. More than four years later, however, there have been no significant updates on the project. In a recent interview, Waititi humorously addressed its status, but his comments offered little clarity on whether the movie will ever materialize.
Waititi was asked if the Star Wars project is still alive.
“What was ever alive? What is death? You know, death is just a new opportunity. More life to grow and flourish,” he joked in an interview with The Playlist. “Everything’s always in development. My advice for any filmmaker is, ‘Just say yes to everything.’ Because, you know, things come and go. And you never know what stage things are. I’ve been attached to things that have disappeared for three years and then bubbled back up. I’m like, ‘Oh, I thought that thing was dead. Now I’ve got to go do that again.’”
In this sense, it seems like Waititi was offered an opportunity to develop a ‘Star Wars’ movie, he said yes, and that project hasn’t become his or Lucasfilm’s priority. Since the announcement of his ‘Star Wars’ involvement, Waititi has been busy. He directed ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and the upcoming ‘Next Goal Wins’ while also working on TV projects like ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits.’ Waititi has stayed connected to ‘Star Wars’ in a different capacity, voicing the droid IG-11 in the Disney+ series ‘The Mandalorian.’
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm has faced challenges with its big-screen output. The last ‘Star Wars’ film, ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ was released in 2019. Since 2017, the studio has frequently announced new projects to generate fan excitement, only for many to face indefinite delays or cancellation.
