Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin Live-Action Movie Is In Works And It’s R-Rated

The ‘Boy Kills World’ co-writer will pen the live-action script.

Paramount Pictures is working on an R-rated movie based on the IDW’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.’ Walter Hamada will produce the project written by Tyler Burton Smith. He is partnered with Paramount through his 18hz production company as part of a long-term deal.

Hamada previously took part in big-scale horror franchises like ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘It.’ These films were produced under the New Line Cinema section of Warner Bros. His company now seeks to focus more on the horror genre, and ‘The Last Ronin’ comics fit the vibe.

The mini-series is set in a future totalitarian New York City. The story follows the Ninja Turtles and master Splinter as they are hunted down by Shredder’s grandson. Only one Turtle survives and looks to get revenge.

The Comic Books’ Success

The original Ninja Turtles creators, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, came up with the ‘The Last Ronin’ concept. Eastman later teamed up with Tom Waltz to write the story. He did the artwork with the Escorza brothers and Ben Bishop.

The comic series came out between 2020 and 2022. It became one of the top sellers in 2023, according to Circana BookScan.

The second sequel titled ‘TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution’ hit the shelves last year. The first issue alone sold over 140,000 copies.

Now, IDW is also set to release a new mainline Ninja Turtles comic series for the brand’s 40th anniversary.
