‘The Batman 2’s Delay May Be Bigger News Than It Seems

‘Batman 2’s delay may be due to integrating it into the DCU.

‘The Batman Part II’ has been delayed until October 2027. Andy Muschietti recently provided the first significant update on ‘The Brave and the Bold’ since it was announced that he would direct the project. On the California Secreta Podcast, Muschietti stated:

“‘The Batman’ [The Brave and The Bold] project has been postponed a little bit so I might do another film before that.”

The same day ‘The Batman Part II’ was delayed, Muschietti confirmed that ‘The Brave and the Bold’ had also been postponed. As far as is known, the latter project had no official release date or completed script. However, Muschietti appears to have no immediate plans to begin work on ‘The Brave and the Bold.’

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter noted that ‘The Batman Part II’ is no longer referred to by that title. In a single day, ‘The Batman Part II’ was delayed by a year, lost its title, and ‘The Brave and the Bold’ faced delays as well. While there may be other reasons for ‘The Batman Part II’ losing its title, it could indicate a rebranding to better align with the DCU.

James Gunn’s previous comments on Threads confirmed that ‘The Batman Part II’ has no completed script, though parts of it are written. Gunn was also asked if integrating ‘The Batman’ into the DCU was being considered. While he didn’t confirm or deny this possibility, he stated:

“I’ve contemplated it, yeah. I contemplate everything and talk about everything. I’m committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories. We want to be able to tell a story where ‘Superman’ is very different or tell a Red Sun story or whatever. We want to be able to play with these characters in different ways.”

‘The Batman’ grossed $770 million at the box office, outperforming every DC film released since. In contrast, the only DC movie released in 2022, ‘Black Adam,’ didn’t even reach $400 million. The 2023 DC lineup, including ‘Blue Beetle’ ($131 million), ‘The Flash’ ($271 million), ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ ($134 million), and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ ($440 million), collectively totaled just $976 million. In 2024, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ earned only $206 million, with nearly every DC film losing money for Warner Bros. Discovery. With James Gunn and Peter Safran leading DC, they still report to CEO David Zaslav, who was hired to address WBD’s financial struggles. From a financial standpoint, including ‘The Batman’ in the DCU might make sense. (via ComicBookMovie)

Another potential clue hinting at ‘The Batman’s integration into the DCU is Clayface’s release date and those involved in the project. The film is slated for release on September 11, 2026, just weeks before ‘The Batman Part II.’ Rumors of ‘The Batman’ joining the DCU have been circulating for some time, and this delay could support that theory. Furthermore, Matt Reeves, who is producing Clayface, might signal a closer connection. While it’s possible Reeves was brought on simply because he’s a talented filmmaker, it’s equally plausible that he’ll be involved in all Batman-related projects moving forward.
