Matt Reeves recently confirmed to Collider that ‘The Batman’ franchise would be a complete trilogy, just as he planned before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over and rebooted the DC Universe.
“Yes, that is still the plan,” the filmmaker said during the interview for HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ spinoff show (per ComicBook). “I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”
A sequel for the 2022 film is already on the way. Filming will start early next year and bring back Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne as well as Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.
‘The Batman – Part II’ will pick up shortly after ‘The Penguin’ finale, though it’s unclear who the story’s main villain will be. Reeves didn’t reveal any names for Batman’s new antagonist, but he did touch on the topic in a recent chat with Total Film.
“I want the emotional part of the story to be Robert Pattinson’s – to be Bruce & Batman’s,” he shared. “I’m excited by the antagonist of the next movie, but I don’t want Batman’s arc to step back to allow space for another group of characters.”
‘The Batman – Part II’ will hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
