‘The Boys’ Mocks ‘Batgirl’s Sudden Cancelation In A Clever Way

This week’s episode made a clear reference to the unexpected cancellation of the ‘Batgirl’ movie.

Warner Bros. canceled ‘Batgirl’ in summer 2022 although its production was already wrapped up. The company cited cost-cutting measures as a reason for the move, but it became a topic of discussion in the entertainment industry.

‘The Boys’ nodded to the cancellation in this week’s ‘Season 4 Finale.’ An early scene in the episode showed a news update on VNN Today announcing that Vought’s much-expected movie ‘Training A-Train’ was shelved despite being complete.

Vought’s reasons for the decision mirrored Warner Bros. as executive Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie) explained a tax write-off would be more profitable for the company than releasing the film.

What Happened To ‘Batgirl?’

WB cast Leslie Grace to play Barbara Gordon in the scrapped ‘Batgirl’ film. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed a script from Christina Hodson.

The company noted while announcing the cancellation:

“The decision to not release ‘Batgirl’ reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of ‘Batgirl’ and ‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’ and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

The film also planned to bring back JK Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The cast featured Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh and Jacob Scipio, Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai in yet-to-be-revealed roles.
