‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Star Criticizes MCU: ‘Everything Is A Sequel To A Sequel’

He pointed out that Nolan only wanted a trilogy, but the MCU keeps making sequels.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt shared some thoughts about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its focus on sequels.

Gordon-Levitt, who played Robin John Blake in ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ told Inverse that director Christopher Nolan always intended to make only three Batman movies. He explained that Nolan never planned to continue the story beyond his trilogy, saying:

“Nolan was making a trilogy. He never wanted to make any more movies. This was an ending to his trilogy. It’s funny, we look back on it now with the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel. But back in those olden days, doing a trilogy was a lot, and that was how it was thought of.”

Gordon-Levitt also addressed rumors about him being considered for roles in the MCU, such as Ant-Man’s Scott Lang and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord. When asked about missing out on these roles, he simply said:

“Yeah, people like to talk. I understand why it’s fun to talk about these kinds of things. I don’t really have anything to add to this. I’m sorry.”

There Was Expectation For a Fourth Batman Movie

Gordon-Levitt’s character in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ was a heroic cop who worked with Batman and Jim Gordon. It was later revealed that his full name was ‘Robin John Blake,’ an obvious nod to Batman’s comic book sidekick. Bruce Wayne left a package for John Blake that led him to the Batcave, and this hinted that he might become the new Batman. There was talk about a possible fourth movie to continue Robin’s story, but it never happened. Instead, Ben Affleck took over the Batman role in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is the final movie in Nolan’s Batman trilogy and was released in 2012. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and features a well-known cast including Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon. The story is set eight years after the events of ‘The Dark Knight,’ with Bruce Wayne living in seclusion after retiring from being Batman. Gotham City enjoys a period of peace until Bane arrives with a plan to destroy the city.

You can revisit ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on Max and Prime Video.
