Fans of the Syfy series ‘The Magicians’ have been on a rollercoaster of hope and disappointment since the show’s cancellation in April 2020, following its fifth season. A Look Back at the Series
‘The Magicians‘ debuted with a commercial-free screening of its first episode on December 16, 2015. Based on Lev Grossman’s novel, it was a series filled with magical adventures and complex character arcs.
Over its five-season run, the show received annual renewals, with each new season premiering in January from 2017 to 2020. Especially after the departure of Jason Ralph’s character, Quentin Coldwater, in Season 4, the series had to deal with plot shifts.
By the fifth season, Syfy had nearly exhausted storylines from the novels. The fifth season premiered on January 15, 2020, and was later announced to be the final season.
Is The Season 6 Possible?
Despite the conclusion of its fifth season, the idea of a sixth season for ‘The Magicians’ hasn’t completely vanished.
Executive producer Jason McNamara revealed in April 2020 that the team behind the series had mapped out a framework for Season 6. This plan was formed despite no current platform expressing interest in reviving the series. McNamara noted the existence of a document outlining the proposed season’s arc, saying:
“We have a document that may someday be available on eBay that is the arc of season 6. I mean, you have to be just optimistic enough to be ready in case someone writes you a big check to produce a season on television. I know [co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers], [executive producer] Sera Gamble, [executive producer] David Reed, and I were really starting to get excited as we mapped out the broad strokes of what a season 6 should be. It was interesting.”
However, as of November 2021, no streaming service or network had stepped forward to save ‘The Magicians’ from cancellation. Besides, Syfy’s statement at the time of cancellation did not indicate plans for future seasons.
Who Would Be in the Cast?
The main cast members include Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn. Since the show’s conclusion, several cast members have embarked on new ventures. Stella Maeve is involved in a drama about Charles Manson’s followers, Rick Worthy stars in ‘Station 19,’ and Brittany Curran features in the sci-fi series ‘FraXtur.’ So, the main cast would probably reprise their roles, but some of them might have other projects to focus on.
