Zawe Ashton recently chatted with ComingSoon about her new role as Dar-Benn in the latest Marvel movie, ‘The Marvels.’ She talked about getting into the character of Captain Marvel’s enemy and mentioned some advice from Tom Hiddleston, her fiancé and a Marvel actor too, that helped her in the Marvel world. The actress said:
“I think we do really well at keeping work and life separate, and I think anyone in the acting profession does well to do that. Leaving the work on the stage or on the set, I think, is very healthy. To have a very three-dimensional and flourishing personal life, whether you’re a couple or whether it’s friends or whatever.”
About the advice from Hiddleston, she shared:
“I did ask him what he thought about me doing it when we started, and I have shared the advice that he gave me. I just said, ‘What do you think? What’s your experience been?’ And to repeat myself, he was like, ‘What you put in is what you get out in these films. If you put in a hundred percent and you are able to truly just take it for the incredible opportunity that it is, um, you’ll have an amazing time, and that and that energy will come back to you.’”
The Filming Process Proved The Actor’s Advice Right
‘The Marvels’ came out on November 7, 2023, but it didn’t do as well as expected, becoming the lowest-grossing MCU movie so far. While its release date changed a few times during production, the project’s filming took months, starting in mid-2021 and concluding in May 2022.
Talking about the filming, Ashton explained:
“Because those are long days on those sets. It is not a joke being part of an ensemble who’s making a film like this. I think that was a huge lesson that I came back with every day. I was like, ‘Wow, this is a very, very specific type of work. This is a physical work, this is a mental endurance that you have to exercise as well as saying the lines in the right order on these movies,’ you know?”
Her words went on:
“It’s been a wonderful window into a world that I, honestly, have the hugest amount of respect for and love for now in a way that I just couldn’t have from just watching the movies or the shows or reading the comic.”
Ashton’s Fiance Also Warned Her About Her Costume
Tom Hiddleston, who first appeared as Loki in 2011’s ‘Thor,’ has since reprised his role in multiple MCU projects, including two Thor sequels, three ‘Avengers’ films, and the ‘What If…?’ animated series.
Having worn the God of Michief’s leather suit many times during long set hours, the actor also shared a piece of advice about the Marvel costumes with his fiancee. Last year, Ashton told Entertainment Weekly:
“He also had some very good practical advice, which was: Make sure you have enough zippers to go to the bathroom in your costume. [Laughs] Which is very good advice, I realize now.”
Zawe Ashton’s near future in the MCU seems to be on pause, as her character met her end in the final scenes of ‘The Marvels.’
