Following his legal troubles and his guilty verdict on misdemeanor charges of assault and harassment, Jonathan Majors’ future as Kang the Conqueror in the MCU has ended. As the speculation about who will portray Kang continues, Deadline senior film reporter Justin Kroll updated fans with some disappointing news.
Recent reports suggest that Marvel may have put recasting plans on hold, with no immediate announcements expected. According to one of his tweets, Kroll advised against expecting any updates regarding the character for now:
“[I] see a lot of ‘Who will play Kang next,’ and ‘Here is a top contender for Kang’ comments this week, and all I’ll say is this: don’t expect that news anytime soon. There will be plenty of Marvel breaks in coming weeks on various fronts, but don’t hold your breath on that one.”

Speculation About Colman Domingo Replacing Majors
Rumors have circulated about Primetime Emmy Award-winning actor Colman Domingo taking on the Kang mantle. Domingo, noted for his roles in ‘Rustin’ and ‘The Color Purple,’ addressed these rumors at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala:
“I don’t know; I’m always looking at what I have to do right now… I know there’s talk and conversations around, and I don’t know how much is true. I don’t even get that from my team; I can’t tell if it’s true or not.”
He indicated that while there have been discussions, no concrete offers have been made.
Majors’ Future Career is At Stake
Majors was found guilty last month in New York City. Following his conviction in December, Disney and Marvel Studios have decisively severed ties with the actor. This abrupt departure resulted in changes, such as the rebranding of ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers 5′ (2026).
The impact of Majors’ legal issues extends beyond the MCU. His sports drama ‘Magazine Dreams,’ which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, is now seeking a new distributor after Searchlight Pictures returned the film rights to its creators. Moreover, Majors will no longer portray Dennis Rodman in an upcoming biopic.
Majors’ sentencing is scheduled for February 6, where he could face up to a year in jail. Meanwhile, Marvel shows no signs of slowing down with upcoming releases like ‘Deadpool 3‘ (2024) and ‘Fantastic Four‘ (2025).
More updates are expected as Marvel Studios decides on the future of Kang the Conqueror and other affected projects.
