Tom Cruise Signs A Deal With Warner Bros.: Will ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Return For Part 2?

This big news could mean that ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ might get a sequel.

According to recent news by Comicbook, Tom Cruise has inked a development deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, announced on January 9. This partnership marks a collaboration between the ‘Mission: Impossible’ star and the studio, and it may lead the way for new original and franchise films, including the sequel to the 2014 hit, ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’

Reportedly, the deal will see Cruise working closely with WB Motion Picture Group’s Co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, to develop various film projects. This move rekindles his association with Warner Bros., who previously collaborated on multiple films, including ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘The Last Samurai,’ and ‘Magnolia.’

In a statement, De Luca and Abdy said the following about working with Cruise:

“We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry. Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, ‘We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!’

Today, that has become a reality, and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.”

The Possibility of an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel

Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 novel, ‘All You Need Is Kill,’ ‘Edge of Tomorrow‘ was a success for Cruise and Warner Bros. Following its release, the film garnered positive reviews and amassed over $370 million globally. Besides, it has since gained a fan base eager for a sequel.

The speculation about ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2′ has been a topic of discussion since the original film’s release. Despite the interest from fans, stars, and filmmakers, plans for a sequel had not been formulated, primarily due to the actors’ busy schedules.

Emily Blunt, co-star in ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ has also expressed her interest in a sequel. Five months ago, when asked if she had read a script for the sequel, Blunt responded:

“Yes, we did. There was one that Doug slithered over to me. But I would love to make it a reality; I just don’t know when or how. And how many ‘Mission: Impossible’s does he need? Come back to the side where you can … Wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Incredible.

With the recent development deal and the upcoming conclusion of Cruise’s role in ‘Mission: Impossible,’ the path for “Edge of Tomorrow 2′ seems more plausible. In addition to the potential sequel, Warner Bros. Pictures announced in 2022 that they were developing a television series spin-off of ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ intended for release on HBO Max.

Alongside these exciting possibilities, Cruise’s future projects include ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,’ which is currently in post-production, and an untitled project in collaboration with SpaceX, which is in the pre-production phase.
