Many attempts to develop a new installment of ‘Twilight’ have stalled over the years. However, in September 2024, it was announced that Netflix is working on an animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel series. ‘The Twilight’ show’s storyline will adapt the 2020 novel ‘Midnight Sun,’ which serves as a retelling of the original story from Edward Cullen’s point of view. However, no actors will reprise their roles in the ‘Twilight’ TV show.
In a recent interview with TV Insider about the Peacock horror-thriller series ‘Teacup,’ Chaske Spencer was asked about his thoughts on the upcoming ‘Twilight’ series. The actor, who played La Push leader Sam Uley in the original movies, said he was surprised to learn they were doing an animated adaptation of the 2020 novel. He then confirmed that he will not reprise his role in the series because he feels “too old for Sam”.
He said, “They’re making an anime series on Netflix? Oh, well, I’ll watch it. I’ll check it out. Yeah, I’ll look at it. I’m too old. I’m too old for Sam. [Laughs] Even the voice…I think you can find a younger, better-in-shape actor to do that.”
Though Sam may not be considered as important a character as Edward, Bella and Jacob, Sam’s inclusion in the ‘Twilight’ show will ultimately depend on how faithful the series wants to be to Meyer’s source material. In the original book, Sam is the one who, through his distaste for the Cullen family, inadvertently sets Bella on the path to getting to know them and learning about their vampire nature. Subsequent books expanded on his tragic backstory and role.
‘The Twilight Saga’ is a series of romantic fantasy films based on the Twilight book series by Stephenie Meyer. The first film, ‘Twilight,’ premiered on November 21, 2008. The series had been in development at Paramount Pictures’ MTV Films since 2004, during which time a theatrical adaptation of Twilight was written that differed significantly from the novel.
