The original director of the 1996 movie ‘Twister’ thinks the upcoming sequel ‘Twisters’ is coming out too late.
Jan de Bont recently talked to ComicBook and said:
“I think it is a little bit late. I think it should have been done 15 years ago, because then you might’ve still had a chance to do this combination of visual effects and special effects, and now it’ll be much more visual effects, I’m sure. But that’s being cost-effective. Those things are really … It’s so different now.”
He also questioned why anyone would want to remake the original movie and said that sometimes it’s better to leave things alone:
“I think my movie would be really hard to remake, and why would you want to remake it anyway? What would you improve? Sometimes you have to also let things alone, or you have to really make it a real sequel, like a real continuing story, and not just a completely different story, but I don’t know. I’m curious what he made of it.”
Jan de Bont believes the new movie should’ve been made way back in time. He is worried that ‘Twisters’ will use too much computer-generated imagery instead of the mix of real and special effects that made the first movie successful.
‘Twisters’ is Actually Not a Direct Continuation
‘Twisters,’ the new sequel, is a spiritual successor to the original ‘Twister.’ It will be released almost 30 years after the first movie and will hit theaters on July 19, 2024. The filmmakers tried to use as many real-world effects as possible while using CGI as a more affordable and convincing way to show intense weather.
The original ‘Twister’ starred Helen Hunt as Dr. Jo Thornton-Harding. The story followed Jo, a storm chaser who risks her life to study tornadoes after her father was killed by one when she was a child. The movie was about her chasing the largest tornado ever to hit Oklahoma while dealing with problems in her marriage and competition from rival scientists.
‘Twister’ will be available on 4K Ultra HD on July 9. The new sequel will be in theaters on July 19.
