Viggo Mortensen might be back in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie under one condition.
In a new GQ interview, the actor talked about possibly playing Aragorn again in ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’ He said he would be interested but the story needs to be right and consider his age. The actor said:
“Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”
Details About Peter Jackson’s Trilogy And New Film ‘The Hunt For Gollum’
The original Peter Jackson trilogy is returning to theaters this summer. Additionally, Warner Bros. announced a new film, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ featuring Andy Serkis as Gollum and directing.
Mortensen played Aragorn in Jackson’s films, giving Gondor’s future king a regal feel despite his rugged look. He first appeared as Aragorn in 2001’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ then in ‘The Two Towers’ in 2002, and ‘The Return of the King’ in 2003. Mortensen didn’t return for Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy.
‘The Hunt for Gollum’ faces challenges because it will likely take place during the same time as Jackson’s trilogy. Recasting Gandalf, originally played by Sir Ian McKellen, could be difficult. If the plot involves Rohan and its king, Theoden, the recent death of Bernard Hill, who played Theoden, adds another challenge. ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is expected in theaters in 2026.
