‘What If…?’ Will Feature A ‘Long-Anticipated’ Marvel Character In Season 3, Sources Confirm

Marvel’s Head of Story for the animated show shared new updates about the upcoming episodes.

According to Matt Chauncey, who recently appeared at a LightBox Expo panel (via Laughing Place), ‘What If…?’ Season 3 will introduce a brand new character and feature the ‘long-anticipated’ MCU debut of a ‘well-known Marvel character.’

Details about the hero or villain created just for the animated series are unknown, but the voice actor chosen for the role is reported as ‘a dream casting.’

This will be the second original character the show introduced to the MCU. The previous season brought in Kahhori, a Mohawk woman with new special powers in the episode titled ‘What If… Kahhori Reshaped the World?’

As for the newly-debuting character, their identity is a mystery, though rumors suggest it’s Storm, who might show up to wield Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir.

Season 3 will likely feature nine episodes like the previous seasons, and one will have musical scenes inspired by the 1930s Hollywood comedies. Chauncey shared, “It’s a massive feat for animation, especially with the challenges of coordinating dance and movement. But Marvel went all in, and it’s going to be spectacular.”

‘What If…?’ Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on December 22. In addition to new characters, the season will see the return of known heroes and villains, including Sam Wilson as Captain America.
