It was announced in 2023 that a sequel to 2007’s ‘I Am Legend’ was in the works. There hasn’t been much information about the production so far, but Will Smith says the progress is ‘looking good.’
He recently shared about his collaboration with Michael B. Jordan in a chat with Entertainment Tonight:
“We had a couple of weeks together about a month ago. I think it’s looking good. [We have some] really solid ideas… I think we’re going to make it on screen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that.”
Dr. Robert Neville’s Death Will Be Reversed
Smith’s character, Robert Neville, died in the original film’s theatrical release but will return in the sequel, which will follow an alternate ending where he survived. The sequel will also include more elements from the original novel.
Writer Akiva Goldsman previously talked about the upcoming film’s concept with Deadline:
“This will start a few decades later than the first. We trace back to the original [Richard] Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”
They Have A ‘Cool Concept’ For The Sequel
Will Smith announced the plans for ‘I Am Legend 2’ with an Instagram post in 2022. He shared a photo of a deserted street and tagged Jordan’s name.
The actor later explained to Entertainment Tonight that the decision to make a sequel followed a ‘really, really cool concept’ that he and Jordan helped create:
“It was one of those ones I was gonna leave alone, and then I heard the idea.”
Smith is back in the theaters with ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ at the moment. The film is set for release on June 7, 2024.
