X-Men ’97 Directors Reveal Plans For Spider-Verse-Like Animated Movie

‘X-Men ’97’ picked up where ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ left off decades ago. The team behind this reboot now wants to take the classic show to the big screen.

Directors Chase Conley, Emi Yonemura, and Jake Castorena recently shared their vision for what would be the ‘X-Men’ franchise’s first animated movie. Conley told Inverse:

“First off, it would be a slam dunk. I think that would absolutely be something the audience would want to see, and we would want to be a part of.”

The TV show allowed the directors to explore comic books in short episodes, but they noted that the animators could create more detailed works in the movie format with more budget and time.

The New Film Can Be Like Sony’s ‘Spider-Verse’

‘X-Men ’97’ debuted on Disney+ on March 20. The series received critical acclaim for its animation and script ever since. Yonemura said an X-Men movie in the same standards could rival ‘Spider-Verse’ and ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.’

They explained:

“It feels like we’re already making movie-level animation and events. But just to have that budget and time then to make it a full feature, and to kind of do what ‘Spider-Verse’ and the recent animated Turtles movie did… One of our influences [on ‘X-Men ’97’] was ‘80s and ’90s Japanese animation. ‘Akira.’ ‘Ghost in the Shell.’ Those levels. It’s like: ‘Hey, you want to give us the money and budget to do that for you? But for ‘X-Men ’97?’ Gladly.”

The animated show’s Season 1 finale will come out on May 15. Marvel Animation already started work on the second and third seasons.
