In the newly released trailer for ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ we get a peek at new scenes where Godzilla and Kong seem to team up against a common threat. A notable part has Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall, talking about a danger that scares both Godzilla and Kong. So, it’d be only natural to see other Titans join the fight.
A quick shot in the trailer brings back Mothra, last seen in ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters.’ Around the 30-second mark, Jia, who has a connection with Kong from Skull Island, is shown having visions of Skar King’s rise alongside the return of Mothra.
The trailer briefly shows the Titan’s adult form through Jia’s eyes, hinting at her revival. While it’s not clear what part Mothra will play in this film, this scene ties back to her storyline from ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters.’ Her history of self-sacrifice in the 2019 movie suggests she’s a likely ally for Kong and Godzilla.
The Titan’s Comeback Has Been Teased For Years
The franchise has teased Mothra’s return before, notably in the end credits of ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters’ with a news article about a giant insect egg, which can be another Monthra. This teaser was echoed in ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ through a podcast episode titled ‘Mothra Pregnancy Theory,’ appearing on screen for a brief moment.
Given Mothra’s known ability to be reborn, her return in ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ seems like a natural plot point.
Mothra has been a heroic figure in the franchise since her first appearance in 1961, acting as a guardian of her island, the Earth, and Japan. She has the second most appearances in the MonsterVerse films after Godzilla.
