Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora met her end at the hands of Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ but returned as a variant from the past in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Speaking to Variety in a game of ‘Know Their Lines,’ the actress shared regrets about her performance in the movies directed by the Russo Brothers.
“I wish I could go back and reshoot what Gamora was going through in the ‘Avengers’ movies,” she explained. “I don’t think I was quite understanding what the Russo Brothers [were doing].”
“I wish that I could go back and redo it so that I can push a little harder, because it was such a great opportunity to play a daughter having issues with a dad,” her words went on. “And whether or not she’s having this opportunity to reconciliate or to heal or to repair or simply just walk away from this person – that would have been a great opportunity had I been a little more aware of it back then.”
Saldaña reprised the Gamora role last year in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’ Instead of falling in love with Star-Lord and reuniting with the Guardians, though, this variant joined the Ravagers.
Now, the actress doesn’t see herself back in the Marvel franchise but believes there’s potential for a new take on Gamora. “Let it be a brown girl to play Gamora,” she told Variety for a new cover story. “Give that opportunity to a woman of color and see what the new Gamora is going to bring to the table. Like I brought [‘Star Trek’s’] Nyota Uhura to the table with Nichelle Nichols’ blessing.”
With James Gunn also announcing his departure from Marvel to work on the new DC Universe, the fate of the Guardians is uncertain.
