Peter Capaldi On Why He Has No Interest In Going Back To ‘Doctor Who’

He likes to think of his Doctor as still out there, not just on TV.

Peter Capaldi, or the Twelfth Doctor of ‘Doctor Who,’ recently spoke to Forbes and shared his thoughts about returning to the series.

Considering that former Doctors like David Tennant have made their surprise comebacks, Capaldi’s stance has been a matter of curiosity. Discussing Tennant’s recent return for the show’s 60th anniversary, Capaldi praised the specials, saying:

“I enjoyed it. I thought it was great and a lot of fun. It was wonderful, exuberant, and full of life, drama, and monsters. David was wonderful, and Catherine Tate, of course. It’s ‘Doctor Who,’ you know, it’s a gas and a good thing in the world.”

He then expressed enthusiasm for the series’ future, especially with Ncuti Gatwa set to play the Fifteenth Doctor. Despite this, the actor remained firm in his decision not to return:

“No. I’ve been a long-standing Doctor Who fan since I was a kid. I like the idea that my Doctor is still out there. He’s not available to come and be on TV. The real Doctor is not on TV; the real Doctor is out there.”

Capaldi’s Tenure as the Doctor

Capaldi took over the TARDIS reins from Matt Smith in 2013. His tenure spanned three series and four specials.

A lifelong fan, Capaldi had minor roles in the series and its spin-off, ‘Torchwood,’ before becoming the lead. He voiced the Doctor in the CBBC website’s game and in Lego Dimensions. He also appeared in the ‘Doctor Who’ spin-off program ‘Class’ in 2016.

After his departure in 2017, the actor was succeeded by Jodie Whittaker. Since then, Capaldi has pursued other projects, including a role in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad‘ and an upcoming appearance in the TV series ‘Criminal Record.

As of 2023, Ncuti Gatwa is the Fifteenth Doctor.
