Evan Rachel Wood Says Not Knowing ‘Westworld’s Ending ‘Keeps Her Up At Night’

The show’s cancellation gave the Dolores Abernathy actress a hard time, as she couldn’t help wondering what was planned for the actual finale.

Despite the setup for more adventures, HBO announced on November 4, 2022, that ‘Westworld’ would not return for a fifth season due to a drop in ratings. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s star, Evan Rachel Wood, shared her thoughts on the show’s abrupt end:

“It was devastating in a lot of ways because, first of all, they don’t tell us where the show is going. We were just always told, ‘We know how the show ends,’ when we started. They weren’t writing it as we went along. They had an idea, and we were all just on a bed of nails waiting to see and hear what the conclusion of this was. What it all meant.”

The Ending Left The Dolores Actress With Many Questions

The final episode, ‘Que Sera Sera,’ pointed at the end of humanity with the rise of androids but left an open door for their revival, as it positioned Wood’s character to possibly change the situation. That’s why the actress wanted to learn where the creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan were heading with the story after the finale, although she couldn’t get answers:

“I asked the creators after we got canceled, ‘Can you please just tell me how you’re going to end?’ And they wouldn’t tell me. I think because, I don’t know, maybe somehow, someway, in some iteration, we’ll get to finish it, but I still don’t know. It does still keep me up at night.”

The Actors Were ‘Disappointed’

Centering on Dolores Abernathy, ‘Westworld’ included a large cast of characters throughout its four seasons since 2016. Names like Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and James Marsden, along with Evan Rachel Wood, took part in the show.

Other cast members also commented on the series’ unexpected finale in different interviews. Marsden shared his thoughts during a chat with Rolling Stone, saying:

“I’d be lying to you if I told you that the way we ended ‘Westworld’ wasn’t a disappointment. I’m never going to speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish. I love this ‘Westworld’ family. It was one of those unique opportunities to be part of something where I also would be sitting at home ravenously waiting for the next episode as a fan.”

Luke Hemsworth, playing Ashley Stubbs, shared a similar view, expressing his desire for the show to have continued longer.
