At the 77th British Academy Film Awards, Margot Robbie of ‘Barbie’ did not clinch the Best Actress award, losing instead to Emma Stone for her role in ‘Poor Things.’ This came on the heels of Robbie’s absence from the Oscar nominations list, which previously stirred discussions across the industry.
Despite ‘Barbie’s success, breaking box office records to become the highest-grossing film of 2023 with $1.44 billion in global ticket sales, Robbie’s performance did not secure her a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Although the actress was recognized at the BAFTAs with a nomination, she recently lost to Emma Stone.
Stone, who is no stranger to the BAFTA stage, expressed her gratitude to the screenwriter Tony McNamara in her acceptance speech. She also shared a light-hearted moment about her challenges with the British accent, thanking her dialect coach and the English audience for their acceptance:
“I was playing a British person in this movie, and [Neil] did not laugh at me when he taught me how to say ‘wart-ter,’ even though as an American, I say ‘wahter.’ So thank you, England, for accepting me.”

‘Barbie’ Disappointed Everyone At The Oscars
This year’s Academy Award nominations saw ‘Barbie’ secure eight, including Best Picture. However, both Robbie and Gerwig were absent from the Best Actress and Best Director categories, which left many disappointed, including the actress herself.
Robbie, who had previously shared her concerns about ‘Barbie’ before its release, proved her critics wrong with the film’s overwhelming success. Yet, the journey of ‘Barbie’ through this year’s award season remains a topic of debate, especially after Robbie’s BAFTA loss.
Despite the setback at the Oscars and now the BAFTAs, Robbie has not been left empty-handed this award season — she received a nomination for her producing role on ‘Barbie.’ Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, is expected to launch more projects.
Looking ahead, both Robbie and Stone are set to continue their careers in film, with Robbie involved in an upcoming project with Colin Farrell titled ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.‘ Stone, on the other hand, is set to appear in ‘Kinds of Kindness‘ and ‘Cruella 2.‘
