Greta Gerwig Says She Now Wants A ‘Barbie’ Sequel

Gerwig has changed her mind and now wants to make a sequel to the hit movie Barbie.

‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig recently spoke to Deadline and expressed interest in helming a follow-up to the film. This update marks a notable change from her previous uncertainty regarding the project’s future.

During the conversation with Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye at Vanity Fair’s Oscars after-party, Gerwig showed that she no longer hesitates about the idea of a ‘Barbie 2.’ She said:

“I’m not dismissing it; I want to do it.”

Despite this enthusiasm, Gerwig also noted that while she’s now open to the idea, the path forward is not yet clear.

Does Margot Robbie Want A ‘Barbie’ Sequel?

The first ‘Barbie’ film shattered expectations and records, grossing $1.44 billion worldwide and securing its place as Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film of all time. It also impressed critics, earning eight Oscar nominations and winning Best Original Song. Such achievements naturally led to discussions around a sequel.

Yet, both Gerwig and Margot Robbie previously voiced doubts due to the challenges that lie ahead. Any sequel would not only have to match the original’s critical and commercial success but also assemble a cast capable of living up to the expectations set by the first film’s star-studded lineup.

Despite her initial fears regarding the film’s potential — fears that proved wrong given its critical and commercial triumph — Robbie has been more reserved about the prospect of a sequel. Meanwhile, Gerwig is committed to directing the ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ reboot for Netflix, which places ‘Barbie 2’ further down her timeline.
