The Walking Dead Animated Series Can Happen Under One Condition, The Creator Reveals

Robert Kirkman explains why an animated ‘The Walking Dead’ series is not possible in the near future.

Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard created the 193-issue comic book series in 2003. AMC later picked up the rights to ‘The Walking Dead’ to make an 11-season show.

Now, the studio is a hitch to an animated series for the franchise. Kirkman recently shared in the ‘Letter Hacks’ column of ‘The Walking Dead Deluxe #85’:

“I’d love to see it happen someday, but I don’t think it’ll be possible until I get the rights back from AMC.”

Editor Amanda LaFranco added:

“There’s definitely been developments over the years for something like this, and there’s a lot of fans over here that would still very much love to make that happen.”

Will The Studio Agree To An Animated Project?

AMC’s Scott M. Gimple previously mentioned plans for using animation in some ‘Tale Of The Walking Dead’ episodes. The franchise’s chief content officer told Emmy Magazine in 2020:

“Some will be horror stories, some will be black comedy, some will be adventures. Some might use animation. We could have music-driven episodes.”

But the studio only dabbled with the format so far.

AMC adapted 13 pages from ‘The Walking Dead #1’ to an eight-minute animated motion comic in 2010. They also used a comic-style animation in a part of the webisode series ‘The Walking Dead: Red Machete.’
