Kristen Stewart Isn’t Happy With Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Success: ‘It’s Phony’

She criticizes Hollywood for pretending to empower women by only focusing on big successes like ‘Barbie.’

Kristen Stewart recently talked about Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’  and called it ‘phony.’

Stewart shared her thoughts on how Hollywood promotes women, and she’s not pleased. She told Porter Magazine that Hollywood is picking only a few women (like Robbie and Maggie Gyllenhaal) to show off as leaders, but this isn’t real support:

“[There’s a] thinking that we can check these little boxes, and then do away with the patriarchy, and how we’re all made of it. It’s easy for them to be like, ‘Look what we’re doing. We’re making Maggie Gyllenhaal’s movie! We’re making Margot Robbie’s movie!’ And you’re like, ‘OK, cool. You’ve chosen four.”

The actress appears to be critical, but she also makes it clear that she doesn’t have bad feelings for Robbie or Gyllenhaal. She actually respects them, but it just feels ‘phony’ for her:

“And I’m in awe of those women, I love those women [but] it feels phony. If we’re congratulating each other for broadening perspective, when we haven’t really done enough, then we stop broadening.”

Stewart thinks that just having a few women succeed isn’t enough to really change things in Hollywood.

Stewart Prepares To Make Her Directorial Debut

Stewart is becoming a director for the first time with her upcoming movie named ‘The Chronology of Water.’ She has seen some of the not-so-nice parts of Hollywood while working on this new project, but she believes it will be ‘a f*cking thrill ride’:

“My movie is about incest, periods, and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch… but it’s gonna be a fucking thrill ride. And I think that’s commercial, but I don’t think that I have any gauge on what that means. I think people would want to see that, but then… I think maybe people wanna watch movies about, like, Jesus and dogs.”

As she moves from acting to directing, Stewart seems excited to create movies that are important to her. She’s looking forward to making films that are true to her own ideas.
