‘The Mummy’ Director Reveals One Condition For Potential Sequel

Stephen Sommers is open to making a new sequel, but only if it’s ‘very special.’

Director Stephen Sommers, who directed the original 1999 film and its 2001 sequel, says he’d love to direct a new ‘Mummy’ movie.

Sommers told The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn’t heard anything from Universal about making a fourth movie, but he has a condition to make it happen:

“All the people at Universal are new after I left. I don’t really know them, and they haven’t got ahold of me, so I don’t know what’s in their heads. At the same time, it would have to be something really special. Of course, I would work with all of those actors again.”

Universal might not want to make another film because the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise did not do well.

Brendan Fraser Wants To Return

Fraser is also interested in returning for a new ‘Mummy’ film. In a previous interview with Deadline, he said:

“Gosh, I don’t know any juicy details about it. But it’s kind of an open-ended question for some time now. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t know an actor that doesn’t want a job. I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life, so sign me up.”

2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ did not have Sommers as the director and recast Rachel Weisz’s character. This film was directed by Rob Cohen.

‘The Mummy’ was recently re-released in theaters for its 25th anniversary. The original movies are also available for streaming on Peacock.
