Amazon Gives Up On ‘Silk: Spider Society’ Series

The ‘Silk: Spider Society’ series is no longer moving forward at Amazon.

Amazon decides to stop working on the TV series ‘Silk: Spider Society.’

As per Deadline, the decision to stop the project was made just a few days ago. The series had many problems during its development. The Writers Guild of America strike caused delays last year, and Amazon did not reopen the writers’ room after that. Most of the writers were let go earlier this year, leaving only the showrunner Angela Kang, and a co-executive producer.

There were plans to change the show to appeal more to a male audience. The writers were asked to change the show at one point so it didn’t focus so much on Silk as the main character. Still, the series had several episodes written before the strike.

The Show Was First Announced In 2020

‘Silk: Spider Society’ is based on the Marvel Comics character Cindy Moon (also known as Silk), a Korean-American teenager from Queens who is new to fighting crime. She loves beating up villains to relieve her frustrations and enjoys ’80s and ’90s pop culture.

In a 2023 interview, Amazon’s Katherine Pope said she’s excited about working with Kang on the series. The goal was to work closely with Sony’s Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch to make sure the show met the high standards of the Spider-Man franchise:

“It’s a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I’m really, really excited to be working with her on Silk. She’s just brilliant and a total pro. This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level. They’ve done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we’re executing at that level.”

Sony is now looking for other buyers who might be interested in continuing the project. They recently announced another project with Amazon — a Spider-Man Noir series starring Nicolas Cage, which will debut on MGM+ and Prime Video.
