Prime Video recently announced that they were giving ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ a new season. Variety reported that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine wouldn’t return for the upcoming episodes and cited unnamed sources following the news.
Co-writer Francesca Sloane addressed the rumors in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly:
“I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?’”
The Smiths were stuck in a deadly situation at the end of Season 1. Sloane referred to that and went on:
“We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven’t said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?”
Glover And Erskine’s Future In The Show Is Uncertain
Two assassins (Parker Posey and Wagner Moura) trapped Jane and John Smith in their apartment’s panic room in Season 1 finale. The episode ended with a gun sound but didn’t reveal whether the couple managed to take down their attackers or not.
As of now, even the writers are not sure about the couple’s fate:
“We didn’t even get to start writing [Season 2] yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.”
Sloane didn’t give any updates on the casting but promised:
“There will be an answer as to what happened at the end of Season 1 in Season 2.”
‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Season 1 is available on Prime Video. The ten-episode show is a critical acclaim with 90% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes.
