The first trailer revealed a twist to Harley Quinn and Joker’s dynamic in the upcoming ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ Apparently, Harley will be the one holding influence over Batman’s nemesis as a fellow Arkham patient this time.
Lady Gaga says she will bring a new interpretation to the DC villain in the new film. She recently shared with Access Hollywood:
“You know, my version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters. I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”
The Grammy and Oscar winner joined the cast of Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey. The studio announced that the movie would see release on October 4, 2024, and be rated R.
Margot Robbie Passed On The Role To Gaga
Gaga took over the Harley Quinn role from Margot Robbie. The ‘Barbie’ actress played the Joker’s sidekick and girlfriend in several DC projects, including 2020’s ‘Birds of Prey’ and 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad.’
There’s still a chance for Robbie’s version to return in the main DCU line, but it may not be likely as the actress told Variety earlier this year:
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her.”
She added:
“Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
There Will Be Musical Scenes In The New Film
The ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ trailer debuted at the CinemaCon panel last month and hinted at some musical elements in the film. Director Todd Phillips assured the audience that they didn’t dominate the story, though:
“We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film. Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film. It didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”
The song and dance sequences are expected to be part of Harley and Joker’s shared delusions, although it’s not confirmed yet. The soundtrack may include some pieces co-written by Lady Gaga as well as pieces ‘heavily inspired’ by Liza Minnelli musicals like ‘Cabaret,’ ‘New York, New York,’ and ‘That’s Entertainment.’
