Halle Berry Says Her ‘Flintstones’ Role Was A ‘Big Step For Black Women’

The actress speaks of playing a black character in ‘The Flintstones’ live-action decades ago.

Halle Berry played Fred Flintstone’s secretary Sharon Stone in the 1960s cartoon’s live-action remake. She talked about the character’s impact at the time for the film’s 30th anniversary. The actress said in an Instagram video:

“Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing. But ‘The Flintstones’ was the fabric of our culture. I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, Black women especially.”

The Part Was ‘Small’ But ‘Important,’ She Says

Ms. Stone was originally slated for real-life Sharon Stone, but scheduling issues led to Berry taking her place. The role in the 1994 film became a turning point in Berry’s career, according to her recent post. The actress commented:

“While it was silly and over the top and campy, I knew how important this little part in this big movie actually would be.”

Berry’s Castmates In The Live-Action Remake

Halle Berry wore a short haircut as the seductive secretary working with John Goodman’s Fred Flintstone. The style became her trademark in the 90s.

‘The Flintstones’ cast also included Rick Moranis, Rosie O’Donnell, Elizabeth Perkins, and Kyle MacLachlan. It was also Elizabeth Taylor’s final film appearance.
