In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Viggo Mortensen revealed whether he is open to acting in one of the new ‘Lord of the Ring,’ saying:
“I haven’t read a script. So I don’t know. The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends.”
The Actor’s Earlier Statement On A Possible Sequel
Mortensen has talked before about returning to Middle-earth. In May, he told GQ he didn’t want to play Aragorn again for ‘silly’ reasons:
“Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”
A New ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Movie Is On The Way
The original Peter Jackson trilogy is coming back to theaters this summer. Warner Bros. announced a new film, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ with Andy Serkis as Gollum and as the director. Serkis said the following in a statement when the news broke:
“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran, and Philippa.”
Mortensen played Aragorn in Jackson’s films, first appearing in 2001’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ then in ‘The Two Towers’ in 2002, and ‘The Return of the King’ in 2003. He didn’t return for Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy.
‘The Hunt for Gollum’ will be challenging as it overlaps with Jackson’s trilogy. Recasting Gandalf and Theoden will be difficult, especially after Bernard Hill, who played Theoden, recently passed away. The film is expected in theaters in 2026.
