Bronson Pinchot Reveals Improvised Scene In ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’

The actor’s first scene in decades with Eddie Murphy was unscripted.

Bronson Pinchot’s Serge got off his Bentley and rushed to hug Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley in their first onscreen moment since 1994’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop III.’ Pinchot recently revealed to ComicBook that he improvised the reunion scene in ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F:’

“So, I saw Eddie, and I pulled up and I saw him, and I really did want to give him a hug. I went up and I just crushed him, and I hugged him, and it was real. That was special because it was authentic, and I was happy to see him.”

He also offered advice to young actors:

“Younger actors say to me sometimes on a set, ‘How do you make every take different? I want to do that — how do you do that?’ And I say, ‘Oh, just don’t act.’ They say, ‘What?’ And I say, ‘Acting ruins everything. Once in a while you’re going to have to act because you’re on a green screen and you have to pretend that aliens are eating your hips, but if it’s not that, if you’re not doing special effects or the person you’re opposite got the flu and you have to do it to a piece of tape, don’t act.’”

Murphy Himself Also Improvised During Filming

New film’s cast featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Judge Reinhold along with Eddie Murphy and Bronson Pinchot. Mark Molloy sat on the director’s chair while Jerry Bruckheimer produced it.

Bruckheimer discussed Murphy’s role in a recent interview with Tudum:

“Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously, with age, you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye.”

Molloy noted his improvisation skills by saying:

“Some of the funniest moments in ‘Axel F’ are when Eddie’s improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment, cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.”

‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ follows Axel, his daughter Jane, Detective Abbott, Billy, and Taggart investigating a life-threatening conspiracy. The film is now available on Netflix.
