Xolo Maridueña starred as the lead in the 2023 DCEU film ‘Blue Beetle.’ His ‘Cobra Kai’ co-star, Jacob Bertrand, recently discussed with Screen Rant the idea of teaming up with the Miguel Diaz actor again as comic book enemies now that the Netflix show is nearing its end.
“No, I haven’t quite yet,” said Bertrand when asked if he had been poking Maridueña for a DC Universe role. “I would need to get my knowledge up on superheroes first. I was never the biggest comic book kid growing up. Xolo really is the person that made that happen, though. Even when I first met him, he was constantly saying, ‘That’s my dream role. I want to play Blue Beetle, I want to play Blue Beetle.’”
He continued, “So, kudos to him, he found the thing he was super passionate about and got to play it. You know what, if that ever happened, I would have to play a villain. I would love to be the one trying to kill Blue Beetle. I think that’d be funny. [Chuckles]”
‘Blue Beetle’ didn’t perform as expected at the box office, making only $130.8 million against a budget of $104-125 million. James Gunn and Peter Safran later shared that the movie would stand on its own but the hero would return in the new DCU.
Plans for an animated ‘Blue Beetle’ show are now in progress, with Miguel Puga as the showrunner and Cristian Martinez directing. If successful, there’s a possibility for Xolo Maridueña to reprise his role in a future live-action version.
Jacob Bertrand may get his chance to enter the DC Universe through the animated series first, and perhaps later in live-action. The studio mentioned that voice actors would also play their characters in live adaptations.
Bertrand and the rest of the cast are currently promoting the sixth season of ‘Cobra Kai.’ The first part of the final season aired in July, and the second part will release on November 15, 2024. The series will conclude with a third part in 2025.
