‘Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau Says It’s Men’s Responsibility To Challenge Patriarchy’s Culture Of Violence

Nava Mau believes it’s up to men to fight against the violence of patriarchy.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau said she believes it’s important for men to address how patriarchy has caused violence and shame.

“We have heard the call for women’s voices and gender-diverse people’s voices to be centered as we dismantle the ills of patriarchy,” the actress said. “Part of that work is for men to create space for themselves, to reckon with the violence that patriarchy has inflicted [on men].”

Mau added, “Ultimately, it really is men’s responsibility to address the way that patriarchy has created a culture of violence, shame, and silence.”

“I think that this show has the potential to serve as something that interrupts the cycle of shame and silence,” Nava previously told Vogue when asked what views she hopes this show changes. “Men are survivors of violence, too; men have trauma, too—I think that something that the show starts to explore is the way that cycles of violence come out of that.”

The actress added, “It’s time for men to break down the walls of shame and silence that have been built to sustain the patriarchy. I am here for the empowerment of women and trans people and non-binary people. And I also know that men are part of our world, and we can’t leave men behind.”

Richard Gadd’s ‘Baby Reindeer’ got 11 Emmy nominations. The series is based on Gadd’s own experiences. It shows comedian Donny Dunn being stalked by Martha Scott for over four years. Since it started in April, the show has become very popular on Netflix. Gadd was nominated for Best Lead Actor. Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau were nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
